By the Skin of Her Teeth: Erendira Wallenda’s Daredevil Stunt Over Niagara Falls

On Thursday, Erendira Wallenda successfully hung by her teeth and then by her toes while dangling from a helicopter over Niagara Falls, 300 feet (91 meters) above the water. According to the Wallendas, her stunt broke a world height record set in 2011 by Nik Wallenda, her husband, who hung by his teeth at a height of 250 feet (76 meters) above Silver Dollar City In Branson, Missouri.

Thursday marked a special occasion for the Wallendas, as it was five years ago to the day that Nik Wallenda infamously walked a tight rope over the Falls, and Erendira’s stunt was intended to honor his anniversary. “I remember watching Nikolas as he was crossing the falls and thinking, ‘I wonder what it would feel or look like,’” Erendira recalled to WIVB News. “I was never thinking that five years later, I would have the same opportunity. I feel blessed.”

The daredevil couple hopes to encourage visitors from around the world to come and see the natural wonder of Niagara Falls for themselves.

Food, Friends, Fun & Wine!

The 8th annual Niagara USA Wine Festival was a great way to enjoy the end of July and get ready for August! This was a two day event with 17 different wineries, and a chance to try three different wines from each. The event was a peaceful and relaxing way to enjoy different wineries and socialize with friends.

The festival took place in Academy Park on Center Street in Lewiston. There was free parking and only a $25 fee for early admission, and $30 for day to day ticket admission. After getting checked in, every attendee received a wine glass, coupons for some of the wineries and a book with information about each winery. They had other venders there to sell food and other products, including local farmers’ markets selling fresh fruits and vegetables, pies, jams and different sauces. Some venders even had actual food trucks, including Seas the Day Sea food truck and 716 food truck.

The Niagara Wine Trail did a wonderful job of keeping things running smoothly – even on the second day despite the torrential downpour! Wine Fest PhotoThey had a wine-check booth that held wine purchased by customers, so that they wouldn’t have to carry them around all day while enjoying the festival. There were tables and tents to sit and relax, and musicians playing relaxing music to go with the mood set for the event. The event was a wonderful experience all around! We definitely recommend it to anyone interested in trying a variety of Niagara Wines or just wanting to enjoy a relaxing day out and about in Lewiston. We will see you all there next summer!

Fun at Canal Fest

This past week we were at the 34th annual Canal Fest in Tonawanda! This festival touches base with all ages and has something for everyone, while bringing the community all together for a beautiful week in July every year.  Each day had different events going on, including live music all week. There are scheduled events daily for kids of all ages stretching from obstacle courses to kickball!

This year’s Canal Fest started off on Sunday with opening ceremonies, as well as a chalk art contest. On Monday there was a talent show which was later in the evening, followed by a Canal Fest parade on Tuesday.  Wednesday was the 18th annual car cruise. All of Main Street gets blocked off for dozens of classical cars to be shown off! The car cruise is also used as a food drive, all participants are asked to donate nonperishable items. There was a Diaper derby held by the DeGraff Memorial Hospital, and later in the evening Canal Fest held the 30th Annual “Tim Frank Memorial”, a four mile run.  Friday was the 11th annual Bike Cruise, which is also held on Main Street, and also participates in the food drive. Saturday, Main Street turns into an art show where local artists show off and sell their artwork. Later that evening there was a boat race! Teams built their own boats and raced them down the Canal. Finally, Canal Fest ended on Sunday July 24th, with a grand finale fireworks show.

On top of all these events going on daily, there are also several carnival rides for all ages. They had many local food vendors set up throughout canal fest so there was no going hungry. Later in the evening, there is a beer tent for adults and the band plays until 11pm at the Gateway Stage at the Water.  Along the canal, boaters dock their boats and walk around enjoying the festivities. With temperatures in the 90’s almost the whole week Canal Fest was the perfect summer activity providing entertainment, activities, food and the beautiful waterfront view of the Erie Canal!

Tuesdays In The Park

Lewiston Artpark is a staple of summer for many Niagara locals and frequent visitors. Barenaked Ladies was the first show of the Tuesdays In The Park 2016 season. To kick off the summer, they had a sold out concert! Always try to be there a little early for shows like this even if you have to wait in line. It is worth it if you want a good spot for the show! There is a lot of open space to sit on the grass and in front of the stage, but no chairs are provided so many people bring their own fold up chairs.

TuesdaysInThePark_Logo_4CArtpark does an amazing job providing concert-goers with everything they need at a show –food, drinks, games and other booths set up just like ours. Food options include The Spicy Pickle, Macarollin, Hard Rock Café, and Casa Antica, plus booths that sell snow cones, funnel cakes and anything else you could be craving. We are at Art Park every Tuesday with a booth set up so you can come spin our wheel to win coupon vouchers for the Rainforest Cafe, TGI Fridays, Niagara American Grill, and Sweet treats. We also give away other great prizes like koozies and sunglasses. PLUS – everyone that enters their email address is also put in a drawing for win a free night at the Sheraton at the Falls!

Artpark is a great partner to work with and we are excited for the long summer of concerts ahead. Tuesdays in the Park is something that everyone should add to their summer schedule!

Elephantastic at The Buffalo Zoo

The Buffalo Zoo hosted their annual Elephantastic Event presented by Rainforest Cafe on June 4th, 2016. The Rainforest Cafe sponsored this event which calls attention to the endangered status of the global population of Asian elephants.  ElephantasticThis event was also held to celebrate two specific Asian elephants, Jothi and Surapa.  Some of the activities held at this incredible event were elephant bio facts and raffles, games, prizes, activities and coloring for kids and adults. There was also Elephant Keeper Talk, followed by Elephant Art with Surapa. The itineraries were given away with purchase of tickets so you didn’t miss a thing!

Elephantastic was a spectacular event where many people joined together to celebrate these amazing animals.  With over 1,200 animals at the Zoo, there is definitely not a lack of exhibits to explore. People even had once-in-a lifetime experiences, such as touching elephant hides and bones. The park was very easy to navigate and the staff members were extremely helpful if anyone had questions.

We are very proud to have been a part of this amazing event and to help spread awareness about this endangered species. Thank you to the Buffalo Zoo for having us!
